At Offroad Routes and Tours, we don’t really do "sightseeing" in the traditional sense.
You won’t find us packing anyone into a shiny, sterile tour bus to stare at landscapes through a tinted window, and we definitely don’t plan our routes around the nearest souvenir shop. If a road is perfectly paved and has a highway number, we generally use it just long enough to find the dusty track turning off it!
Our touring philosophy is pretty straightforward, a bit rugged, and built on a few core beliefs:
- No Carbon-Copy Itineraries:
We don't do off-the-shelf package tours, and we never copy-paste a previous route. Your time is too valuable to rely on a recycled formula. We firmly believe that repeating the same trip over and over kills the magic. It dilutes that raw sense of discovery—not just for us, but most importantly, for you as our guest. Every expedition is built individually from scratch so that when we hit the trail, we are all exploring something fresh together.
- The Best Views Are Earned:
The most spectacular places on earth—whether it’s the jaw-dropping plunge of Van Zyl’s Pass, the haunting silence of the deep desert, or a hidden riverbed—don't come with a tarmac slipway. To see the wild as it truly is, you have to meet it on its own terms. That means low-range crawling, airing down tires, and working as a team to spot each other over the tricky bits. When we finally light the fire at night, you’ll know you earned that view.
- We're Secretly Total Nature Geeks:
While we love a good technical challenge, we aren't just out there to test our suspension or smash bash plates. For us, a great tour isn't measured solely by how tough the track is. We get just as excited about spotting a magnificent, centuries-old baobab, a rare desert flower pushing through the cracked earth, an incredible bird, or a graceful kudu stepping through the brush. The obstacles are fun, but the living, breathing African bush is the real reason we're out there.
- Real Wild Camping (and Better Nightlife):
When the driving is done, we don't pull into crowded holiday resorts with rowdy neighbors and neon lights. We head for true wild camps where absolute self-sufficiency is the name of the game. There is nothing quite like sitting by the fire under a massive canopy of southern stars, listening to the unfiltered soundtrack of the bush. In that exact moment, when the world feels completely quiet, you’ll understand exactly why we take the hard road.
- Small Convoys, Real Crew:
We cap our groups at five vehicles for a very good reason. Five isn't a crowd; it's an expedition team. When you spend your days managing tire pressures through deep river sand or helping each other navigate a rocky ridge, you stop being a group of individual travelers and become a tight-knit crew. The best stories around our fires are always about the obstacles we tackled together that afternoon.
