The Joy of Overlanding: A Journey into the Unknown
Discover the Thrill of Overlanding in Southern Africa
More than 20 years ago, I embarked on my first overlanding adventure, a journey that forever transformed how I viewed travel. An invitation led me deep into the Richtersveld Conservation Area, a land of untamed beauty and rugged terrain. As I navigated the dusty tracks and rocky landscapes, I realized something profound: overlanding is more than travel—it’s a way of life.
Why Overlanding is the Ultimate Adventure
From that first expedition, I was hooked. The sheer thrill of exploring off-the-grid destinations, the freedom of a self-drive 4×4 tour, and the joy of discovery with fellow travellers became the heart of my journeys. Overlanding isn’t just about reaching a destination; it’s about the raw experience —immersing yourself in nature, traveling roads few have dared, and embracing the unpredictability of the open land.
The Importance of a Well-Equipped 4×4
A well-prepared overlanding vehicle is more than just transport—it’s a gateway to discovery. Outfitting a 4×4 with rugged tires, recovery gear, and essential camping equipment ensures self-sufficiency, allowing travellers to reach remote wild camping spots where formal facilities don’t exist. This independence is what makes overlanding so rewarding — relying on your own skills, gear, and instincts in the great outdoors.
Forging Connections in the Wild
Overlanding isn’t just about the landscapes; it’s about the people we meet along the way. From sitting around a fire beneath a sky full of stars to sharing stories with local guides who know the land intimately, these chance encounters create lasting friendships. The off-road adventure community dissolves borders, bringing together explorers from all walks of life — solo travellers, families, and global adventurers, all bound by a common love for the unknown.
Exploring Southern Africa’s Hidden Gems
The less-travelled roads lead to places untouched by crowds — where solitude amplifies nature’s grandeur, and each bend in the track reveals new wonders. At Offroad Routes and Tours, we embrace this spirit of exploration, guiding self-drive 4×4 overlanding expeditions to destinations that demand effort but reward in ways words can hardly capture.
Join us as we venture into the wild, embrace the unpredictability of the journey, and experience the pure joy of overlanding—exhilarating, untamed, and infinitely rewarding.

Our Magnificent Team
Meet André & Mariëtte
We’re André and Mariëtte Ferreira—the husband-and-wife duo behind Offroad Routes and Tours. Offroad was born from André’s deep love for wild places and winding tracks, and together we’ve grown it into something that reflects both our strengths. While André still balances a corporate career, he pours his heart into crafting routes, leading tours when time allows, and shaping the soul of what Offroad stands for. I’ve stepped fully into the day-to-day adventure, making sure every journey runs with warmth, precision, and purpose. Different in what we bring, but united in our passion for overlanding—we thrive on creating experiences that leave dust on your boots and wonder in your heart.
More than 20 years ago, we set off on our own overlanding adventures, just the two of us and an open map. What started as weekend getaways quickly turned into planning and guiding trips for friends, and eventually, a full-time passion for sharing the road less travelled.
But for us, it’s never been just about ticking places off a list. Every destination has a story — its own history, culture, and pulse — and we believe that’s what makes travel truly meaningful. Whether we’re introducing you to ancient desert landscapes, remote communities, or forgotten tracks with tales to tell, our goal is simple: to connect you not just to the place, but to what makes it come alive.
Come travel with us — and discover not just where the road leads, but what it reveals.
